Hot Stone Therapy

 Hot Stone Therapy involves the use of smooth surfaced river rocks that are heated by water. The warmed stones provide the soothing heat for deep tissue work, circulation, and an obvious relaxing and comforting effect. The practitioner utilizes warmed stones to glide across the body providing toxin-clearing acupressure and energy balancing. The heat of the rocks ranges from 104 to 112 degrees. Physiologically, the chemical reaction of blood and lymph movement is accelerated with the use of the heated stones. Psychologically, a state of relaxation is reached within minutes of placement of the first stones.
As in most bodywork, the client is undressed. A towel on top of the traditional sheeting is used to absorb excess heat. The therapist places stones along the energy meridians and/or in particular areas to address different healing aspects. Each stone has a role in the session; some are meant more for the trigger points, others focus on balancing energy. Stones may also be placed in the palms and between the toes. A heavier, but comforting stone is placed on the abdomen area and stays with the client in both the supine and prone positions.
Then comes the massage itself, which can involve a variety of treatments including deep tissue, basic Swedish, or Shiatsu. The therapist applies oil to the body and puts the warmed stones to work. Finally, the session ends with the removal of stones and like with other massage techniques, the client receives a resting period to absorb the work completed.
Hot Stone Therapy is an updated technique that employs historical, multi-cultural, physical and spiritual healing. It not only prepares the tendons and ligaments for a massage by relaxing them with the application of heat, but also soothes tired, stressed tissues as well.

Swedish Massage Technique

A massage therapist (originally called masseuse or masseure) generally uses massage oil or massage lotion to perform long, smooth strokes over the body. Swedish massage is done with the client covered by a sheet, a technique called draping. The massage therapist systematically massages one part of the body and then covers you up before moving on to another part of the body.
Swedish massage is the most widely known type of massage and really forms the basis of many other types of massage, including deep tissue, sports and aromatherapy massage

Active Isolated Stretching:

Active Streatching

Active Isolated Stretching (AIS) is a scientifically designed flexibility system that works with the body to create and maintain balance. With AIS you gently stretch a specific muscle, hold the stretch for 2 seconds and then release. The pumping action circulates purifying oxygen into the muscle tissue and flushes out damaging toxins such as lactic acid.
Pioneered by Aaron L. Mattes, Active Isolated Stretching is practiced in many areas of healthcare and sports by a multitude of Doctors, Massage Therapists, Physical Therapists, Chiropractors, Personal Trainers and Athletes to improve the body's potential to not only heal itself, but to enhance performance as well. Active Isolated Stretching helps the body to function efficiently by increasing range of motion of the joint and neuro-muscular re-education. 

How AIS Works

There are two primary principles that provide the basis for how AIS works. The first is called reciprocal inhibition and innervation, which means that if you want to lift your arm, your nervous system has to shut off the muscles that bring your arm down while turning on the ones that lift it up. AIS works with your nervous system, and in the process re-educates the muscles to function properly and how to utilize and maintain full range of motion. The second principle is to hold the stretch for 2 seconds, and no longer. Holding a stretch for longer than 2.5 to 3 seconds will cause your body to engage a protective reflex. This stretch reflex will trigger a muscle contraction in the muscle you are trying to stretch.
By not tripping the stretch reflex you are able to get a gentle stretch, without the body fighting itself. The stretch is repeated 8 to 10 times in a set. The repeated "pumping" action of the muscle allows for increased circulation to the area. Because AIS targets very specific angles of the muscle and promotes full ROM of the joint, the results are a highly efficient and effective stretch.
